October 2013 Update: PHL Traffic Delays That Could Affect You!

Nothing is as nerve-wracking as encountering unexpected PHL traffic delays on your way to the airport, and worrying if you will miss your flight. Knowing in advance what delays you may encounter en route to your Airport Parking facility will allow you to leave extra time and avoid the stress.  The wonderful airport shuttle van drivers at Expresspark and Smart Park know the best routes to get you quickly to the airport from the Expresspark and Smartpark lots, but it is the traffic you may encounter getting into the airport vicinity that you need to be aware of.  So read on!

If you don’t travel into Philadelphia frequently (or even if you DO), here is an update on delays you are likely to encounter  traveling towards the Philadelphia International Airport, depending on the date / time you are traveling.

Readers – please post! If you know of a specific ongoing situation causing driving delays en route to PHL from your area, that is not mentioned below, please share with us!

From Delaware:
During morning rush (approx. 7-9 AM) and mid-afternoon through evening rush (3-7 PM) traffic can back up from the Delaware state line through the Commodore Barry Bridge.  Rt. 322 can also back up as a result. Allow an extra hour or so to get to the airport at these times to be safe.

From Points North:
Morning and evening rush (7-9 AM and 4-7 PM) will result in delays on I-95, especially around Cottman Ave. and again around Girard Ave., due to ongoing construction in these 2 areas. Allow an extra hour.

From New Jersey:
Ongoing construction on the Walt Whitman Bridge – A multi month re-decking project is underway on the Walt Whitman Bridge and is not scheduled for completion until later this year. The bridge speed limit will remain at 35 mph during construction, with frequent lane closures. The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) advises that during peak traffic periods you consider taking the Ben Franklin Bridge or the Commodore Barry Bridge as an alternative to the Walt Whitman Bridge. Please check the DRPA site http://www.drpa.org/travel/construction.asp for lane closures particular to your travel time.

Sporting Event Delays:
Sporting event delays affect all traffic using both I-95 North and South. If there is an Eagles home game, a Flyers home game, or a 76ers home game starting within 2 hours of your expected drive time, allow extra time accordingly, in addition to extra time for evening rush,  if applicable. If you are traveling to the Philadelphia International Airport in October, check the schedule of home games below that may affect your drive times.

– Wed, Oct 2 – 7:30 PM – Flyers
– Tues, Oct 8 – 7:00 PM – Flyers
– Fri, Oct 11 – 7:00 PM – Flyers
